Dr. Vincent Baeten
(Walloon Agricultural Research Centre (CRA-W), Gembloux, Belgium)

Dr. Ir. Vincent Baeten got his Engineer degree in Agronomy (1993) and PhD (1998) in Agricultural Sciences from the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium). He has been awarded of a Marie-Curie Fellowship (1996-1998) at the Instituto de la Grasa of the CSIC (Spain). He is head of the Food and Feed Quality Unit of the Valorisation of Agricultural Products Department of Agricultural products of Walloon Agricultural Research Centre (CRA-W, Gembloux - Belgium). The Food and Feed Quality Unit is involved in the development of rapid, multi-analytes and untarget methods based on electronic and vibrational spectroscopy (Fluorescence, VIS, NIR, NIR imaging, MIR, Raman), optical microscopy and chemometrics. The Unit houses 35 different spectrometers, microscope and imaging systems, and is accredited ISO 17025.
Dr. Ir. Vincent Baeten has about 20 years of experience in European projects dealing with the development of spectroscopic methods. In the last 10 years he has participated to several European projects dealing with quality, safety, traceability and authentication of food and feed products (STRATFEED, TYPIC, MEDEO, CO-EXTRA, TRACE, SAFEED-PAP, FEEDforHEALTH, CONFFIDENCE, QSAFFE, FOODINTEGRITY). Since 2010, he is one of the Belgian representatives at the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) of the EC. Dr. Ir. Vincent Baeten is deputy director of the European Union Reference Laboratory for Animal proteins in feedingstuffs (EURL-AP, http://eurlap.craw.eu). In the global framework of the eradication of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), EURL-AP focuses on the detection and identification of prohibited animal proteins in feed. This laboratory ensures the correct implementation of the scientific methods and the development of the requested skills through each National Reference Laboratories of the 27 European member states.
Since 2013, he is also invited professor at the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL). Dr. Ir. Vincent Baeten has been awarded of the 2011-Q-Interline Sampling Awards for the outstanding contribution in sampling applied to spectroscopy methods. In 2012, he was awarded by the Brasilian Program Ciência sem fronteiras as Pezquisador visitante especial at University Federal of Para (UFPA, Belem, Brazil). On the date of March 2015, he has published more than 110 scientific papers and book chapters and has an h factor of 20.
