Something from the history of the Slavonic House

On the street Na Příkopě sits the “Slovanský Dům” (Slavonic House), a spacious and modern shopping center featuring top stores, restaurants, cafes, beauty salons and a multiplex cinema. This unique complex sits on the foundations of 2 medieval houses one of which was supposedly bought by Jan Zizka, the famous Hussite leader in 1414. The current design of the complex has its roots in the 17th century Baroque renovation by Jan Batolomej, Baron Vernier de Rougemont who was also the proprietor of the geometrically designed French garden located in the courtyard.

A baroque palace, built around 1697, was rebuilt in 1797 by F. Heger in Classicism style, while retaining the original layout of the builder of the palace, including two baroque portals, but increased floor of both the inner aisles. In the years 1875-1945 the house served as a social and political center and casino of Prague Germans (who in 1910 accounted for 6.1% of the 223,741 inhabitants of Prague). In the rear wing was still luxurious restaurant and extensive garden.

The 1997 complete reconstruction respected the Baroque-Art Nouveau look, which the building has featured since the beginning of the 20th century. Inside this lovely social complex you will be astonished by the smart, modern design and combination of high-end retailers, award winning restaurants, modern administrative space and luxury residential housing. In addition, Slavonic House hosts a multiplex cinema and Art Nouveau ballrooms to suit conference needs. The French garden in the center of Slavonic House has been maintained in the same geometric style up to present days and is the perfect place for a daytime al fresco lunch or an invigorating cup of coffee.

Behind a habitat for the fiacres we see one of the first shops to auto needs and above advertising Michelin tires, evidencing the long tradition of this world-renowned French company.
